Kenia and Barbara Smith

How has this helped you reconnect?
Black LGBTQ Feminist History!

This is a photo of myself and Barbara Smith, an ICONIC Black lesbian feminist writer and publisher and activist. She created Kitchen Table Press and the Combahee River Collective, both deeply formative to Black feminist thinking at large, and really important to coming into myself as a young Black queer woman. Barbara's work with Kitchen Table Press inspired me to start my own, Porch Water Press, which seeks to publish radical work by BIPOC, LGBTQ, and working class writers today. She's also from Cleveland like me! Barbara is a longtime friend and mentor, and this photo is from our first meet up in person together, during which I brought two of my favorite of her books. She signed them "To Kenia, who is carrying on the tradition of brave Black women. In sisterhood and struggle, Barbara Smith."
