James Baldwin
How has this helped you reconnect?
I chose the poet/author James Baldwin because a lot of his writings made me realize that some of the feelings I was having about myself and my place in the world were not only mine. That other people have not only felt like me but have articulated and published their feelings in a way I never could. Specifically the book, The Fire Next Time, was critical in how I saw myself and the environments I operated in.
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”
